THE DEADLY TRUTH ABOUT OBESITY

Lillian Tsikira

Q: Can Obesity Kill You?

Yes - there are about 2.8 million adults a year that die from being overweight or obese globally, it is the fifth risk for global death.

The Framingham Heart Study states that If you are obese and a non-smoker, women lose about 7 years of life and men lose about 6 years of life.

If you are obese and a smoker, both women and men lose at least 13 years of life.

Q: Which chronic illnesses are caused by obesity?

Diabetes, Heart Disease and stroke, high blood pressure, some types of cancers, gallbladder disease and gallstones, osteoarthritis, gout, breathing problems like sleep apnea (when a person stops breathing for a short time during sleep) and asthma.

Obesity can affect every organ of your body.

Obesity complications are metabolic, mechanical and mental.

Obesity increases the risk of:

  1. Type 2 diabetes.

  2. Cardiovascular disease including coronary artery disease, stroke, heart attacks, dyslipidemia and heart failure.

  3. Gallstones.

What are the options available for weight loss?

The most effective way to reduce obesity is through lifestyle intervention that involves dietary changes, increased exercise and reduced stress.

When it comes to making lifestyle changes to overcome obesity, there are two groups of people. The first group of people just don’t know what to eat and how much to eat…

The second group of people know better, but they do not always do better because they think that chronic illness will never affect them. Unfortunately, it can happen to them and in most cases, it is happening to them already.
